Contrary to what some people consider, pineapples do not grow on timber — they develop out of the ground, from a leafy plant.

The plant carries stocky leaves whorled around a central stem. In a healthy pineapple plant, the tapered, swordlike leaves can develop as much as about 5 toes (1.5 meters) lengthy.

The pineapple fruit grows out of the appropriate of the central stem. The fruit is in fact the effect of dozens of individual fruit-producing flora which have fused into a single fruit, which is capped with a "crown" carrying a lot of short leaves.

In contrast to most fruits, pineapples aren't grown from seeds. regular commercial types of pineapples are "self-incompatible," that means that the flowers' pollen cannot fertilize members of the equal variety.
