Northern Territory's greatest pineapple farm continues to extend

Harvest has started on the Northern Territory's biggest pineapple farm, which continues to expand against 12 months-circular construction.

Piñata Farms, Australia's biggest pineapple producer, has grown pineapples in Queensland for many years and remaining 12 months picked its first NT crop.

Operations supervisor Stephen Scurr said the business learnt lots from ultimate 12 months's harvest, and became impressed with this 12 months's crop.

"Last year became type of an ordinary crop in our books, but this yr our fruit dimension has in reality better and may improve even additional as we get into the crop," he noted.

"You might be always learning, but yeah, we're very happy."

Mr Scurr referred to there was now more than 1.1 million pineapple vegetation on the farm at Humpty Doo, south of Darwin, and the business became pushing forward with its enlargement plans.

"Our original plan changed into to give it three years, so planting round 15 acres a yr and notice the way it performs," he instructed ABC Rural.

"However after our first year we felt that we had potential here, so we doubled that and we'll double it once again.

"We feel the climate here is greatest for growing fruit and giving it an excellent candy flavour.

"We consider we may do pineapples all-12 months-round right here, and that's the reason our next intention, to maintain extending our season out.

"This 12 months we'll go from February through to August and subsequent year, all being neatly, we'll probably prolong that [season] out even extra, and perhaps the following 12 months we'll confidently [be harvesting] throughout one year with a little bit of success."

Mr Scurr pointed out NT pineapples would continue to be sold into the local Darwin market "which has been extraordinarily supportive".
